| Trinidad Introduction - Trinidad Car Rental |
Trinidad is a large island but few visitors tour it all. Most of Trinidad's attractions -- Port of Spain, the Northern
Range and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary -- are in the northwest section of the island, all within an hour's drive of the
airport.
This town of red-tile roofs and cobblestone streets is a must for visitors. One of Cuba's seven original towns, it was
founded in 1514.
Magnificent examples of architecture from the 1600s-1800s still stand (it's a UNESCO World Heritage City). You may notice
that the majority of buildings are painted yellow. In the tropical sun, that color is thought to be easier on the eye
than white.
A lot is packed into a relatively small place in Trinidad: There are a surprising number of excellent museums, including
the Museum of the Romantic Era (antiques), a local history museum, an archaeological museum (Indian relics), a natural
science museum (Cuban flora and fauna) and the Museum of Decorative Arts (housed in a former palace).
Those who stay overnight can choose from two large resort hotels -- the Ancon is the most popular -- on the good beach
south of town, but there's no real great find of a hotel in town (Hotel Las Cuevas is overpriced and basic).
So that's why the local casa particulare industry is flourishing. If you are lucky you might lodge in a colonial mansion
filled with antiques.
And don't miss the Ayala Disco, located in (yes, in) a hill overlooking town: A sprawling, multiroomed cave houses the
dance club. The disco is an experience for the eyes and ears -- it has excellent acoustics.
A short distance outside of town is the elegant Iznaga Tower. Climb to the top of this 165-ft-/50-m-high colonial
structure for great views of the surrounding hills. The tower was once used to keep an eye on the slaves at a local
plantation.
In the Escambray Mountains north of Trinidad, in the town of Topes de Collantes, is the massive sanatorium called the
Kurthotel -- which can be toured.
The area also has dense rain forest for those seeking wilderness. 180 mi/290 km southeast of Havana.
