| Saskatoon Introduction - Saskatoon Car Rental |
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's largest city, is the business hub of this agricultural region. You might start your visit with
a tour of the University of Saskatchewan -- it has a lovely gray-stone campus on the banks of the Saskatchewan River.
The university is also home to the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, which is dedicated to the life and times of the former
prime minister, John G. Diefenbaker (there are several interesting exhibits, including a political cartoon gallery).
The local branch of the Western Development Museum is Boomtown, a living museum that re-creates Saskatchewan in the 1910s
with shops, a train station and a cafe.
Other attractions you might consider are the Mendel Art Gallery and Civic Conservatory (an admirable collection of local
and international art) and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, which does a nice job of displaying the ornate crafts and
enduring culture of the country's Ukrainian immigrants.
If you have time, see the historic Delta Bessborough hotel and the Saskatoon Zoo and Forestry Farm Park, which features
more than 200 native bird and animal species.
Beaver Creek is a conservation area with an interpretive center and self-guided tours. Along the river, you'll find the
Meewasin Valley Trail, a 12-mi/19-km hiking and biking trail that passes eight parks and scenic overlooks along its
route, including the Mendel Riverbank and Island Sanctuary and Kinsmen Park.
There are also plenty of lakes and recreational areas in the vicinity. Saskatchewan Place is the city's sports, trade and
entertainment facility.
Annual events in Saskatoon include the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (June), Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan
(June-August), Saskatoon Exhibition (competitions, entertainment -- July), River Roar Power Boat Races (July) and the
Folkfest (multicultural celebration -- August).
Outside the city, the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, just north of Saskatoon, is worth a visit. Opened in 1992, this cultural
center consists of 20 archaeological sites connected by a trail along riverside bluffs.
Some of the sites date back 6,000 years. Visitors can learn how to build a tepee and tan a hide.
Everyone who has time should make the trip to Batoche National Historic Park, roughly 55 mi/90 km northeast of Saskatoon.
This was the site of the last battle of the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, where Louis Riel's Metis insurgents were forced
to surrender (Riel was subsequently hanged).
The park includes the ruins of the Metis village, a church and a museum. Saskatoon is 140 mi/225 km northwest of Regina.

| More Information - Saskatoon Car Rental |
To rent cars from most car rental agencies in Saskatoon you need major credit card, hold a valid drivers licence (the
names must match), and be over 21 years old.
Some agencies allow you to "cash qualify" but the paperwork is extensive and is not viable for out of town visitors
(check when you make your reservation).
TIP: If the person who's name is on the credit card is not the driver, then add the real driver as a second driver (there
may be a small charge for that).
There are plenty of rental agencies in the downtown area, at the airport arrivals level, and around town.
Many agencies have "weekend specials" but reserve a few days before long weekends. July and August are the busiest months
of the year--reserve your vehicle well in advance.
You may be asked if you are heading to the mountains, so you have winter gear in the car, and have the right tires for
mountain driving--it can snow in Banff any month of the year.
TIP: If you are getting a 4-cylinder subcompact, it will drive much better with a standard - not automatic -
transmission (if you're used to that).
