Murcia is located around 50km inland from the Costa Blanca, on Spain's south-eastern coast with the Mediterranean. The city has around 400,000 inhabitants.
Like much of the region, Murcia traces its origins back to the Moors. Elements of its original architecture - dating back to the ninth century AD - are still visible today, although much of the city was rebuilt in the eighteenth century during a period of trading importance. Today the city centre retains a remarkable degree of historical character.
Today it is easy to reach Murcia by air, with international flights (through discount carrier Buzz) connecting the city with destinations in continental Europe. If you're coming from within Spain, you will probably arrive either by bus or rail, which connects Murcia with Cartagena, Madrid and Alicante.
Murcia's cultural attractions are many, including the recently renovated Museo Arqueológico and Museo de Bellas Artes. These two museums (both free entry) offer strong collections of historical artefacts and Spanish art respectively. The city's main cultural attraction is the Catedral de Santa Maria, a huge baroque/Gothic edifice worth visiting both for its remarkable and varied architecture - a product of changing fashions during the years it was constructed - and its fine museum.
Nature lovers will want to visit the Parque Natural de Sierra Espuña, a sprawling, forested reserve of over 250 square kilometres with spectacular walking and climbing. It is most easily reached by car; the journey from Murcia takes between 30 and 40 minutes.
Again there is a variety of accommodation, including a youth hostel and a selection of pensiónes and hotels. The top hotels are the Hotel Siete Coronas and the Hotel Rincón de Pepe.
